Words and Music by Dennis Livingston

The cat went to sleep with my son last night.
Only one of them woke up in the morning's pale light.
The cat went to sleep with my son last night.
One of them never woke up.

My son went to school with a sad, slow walk.
They had grown up together, from before he could talk.
He remembered the way that she rolled on the lawn
on warm, sunny days when the world was new.
Those times were long gone.

She was old, she was ill,
she was slow, she was lame.
She could just barely stumble around.
No one felt guilty, no one was blamed
when right after school, in the cold afternoon,
we wrapped her in cloth that we found in the shed
and put her so still in a hole in the ground.

Now, if you ask me what I really believe,
I don't think the universe cares
whether or not we live or die,
whether we get answers to our prayers.

But just in case, just in case anyone is really in charge.
I want to say while we're having this chat:
When my son went to sleep with his old friend last night
and only one of them woke up in the morning's pale light.
Thank you, thank you, very much.
THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE CAT.
