the song:
It
takes me so long to write a song. The
lyrics go on and on. The storyline must
make sense. I try to make the melody
interesting by varying verses and choruses
by keys, different tempos, whatever. One
day I just muttered, "I wish I could write
a simple song." Ha ! A great title for a
song. Make it so. The result is partly a
satirical jab at my own style, partly a
song about the craft of songwriting
itself. The joke in this comic number is
that, inevitably, this song itself is not
so simple and tells you why. Yes, you'll
find the title of my revue in here too
(actually that title came first, then I
decided to put it in this song). The line
about "grandpa's top tune tricks" is a
family reference - my grandfather, Sam
Levinson, tried to be a songwriter long,
long ago. (See ABOUT
JERRY) Note:
This number makes a perfect ensemble piece
for beginning and/or ending any revue or
showcase of new music. Gender
